Phobia Mentoring:
A Compassionate Option to Living Well with Fear.
BEYOND NEEDLES: WHAT I'VE LEARNED ABOUT LIVING WITH PHOBIAS And can help you navigate through it too
Over the years, I've met many people struggling with different kinds of phobias. Some fear needles, flying, driving, heights, public speaking, crowds, bridges, insects, or medical procedures.
While the specific fear may be different, many people with phobias have several things in common. They often feel misunderstood, ashamed, and frustrated that they cannot simply "get over it."

For many years, I have lived with both trypanophobia (fear of needles and injections) and tomophobia
(fear of medical procedures and surgery).
Last year, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, I was suddenly faced with countless blood draws, IVs, injections, scans, and procedures—what I jokingly call a "needle-palooza."
I tried hypnotherapy, EFT/Tapping, talk therapy, energy work, breathing techniques, nervous system regulation practices, visualization, and relaxation exercises. All of them helped to some degree.
Tell your medical team about your anxiety in advance.
Ask questions and create a plan.
Consider medication support when appropriate.
Ask about prescription numbing cream or spray.
Ask for a butterfly needle when appropriate.
Bring support.
Use grounding, meditation, visualization, prayer, and breathing techniques.
Use earbuds with calming music.
Look away during procedures.
Schedule emotional recovery time.
Celebrate every win.
These are real phobias. Millions of people struggle with them. You have every right to educate healthcare providers, family members, employers, and others about your experience and what accommodations help you function successfully.
It is one-on-one support from someone who has personally navigated significant phobias and understands the emotional toll they can take.
My goal is not necessarily to help you become fearless.
My goal is to help you suffer less, feel more supported, and create a life that is not controlled by fear.
